The Video Music Awards are just like any other award show to me. It’s produced by long running network MTV. The award show itself was not interesting to watch alone, if it wasn’t for the fashion that came along with it.
My sincere regards if you thought Miley was funny or fashionable, because to me she was neither. I think MTV should try to be more racially sensitive, when it comes to letting their hosts appropriate black culture and and make light of issues that surround the black community. I don’t think Rebel Wilson’s joke about the police was funny. I don’t think the the clip of Miley, Tyga and Mike Will Made It playing with a Ouija board channeling a person, who is killed by the LAPD. It’s a better way to bring awareness to the #BlackLivesMatter civil rights movement, and a joke isn’t a way.
Now, let get back to the fashion. These are some of favorite looks from last night:
Today marks me wearing my natural hair for a full month!! *queue the confetti* When I first “big chopped” in November, I was very discouraged about how my hair would react to not receiving relaxers. I was terrified of not wearing weave, because I wasn’t sure I trusted my features enough to be just totally bare and exposed.
Today’s society has black women kind of brainwashed to think we’re only pretty with extras added. This is a lie. I found myself digging deeper into myself as woman by letting my hair do exactly what it was made to do. It flourished. It’s healthy. This is my authentic self.
These are the products I use to help my curls stay on fleek:
It’s rare that we get to see more than two covers with gorgeous black faces. This month we’ve been blessed with five.
Beyonce covers Vogue’s September issue. This is the biggest issue Vogue produces every year. It’s their yearly fashion issue. This issue is always amazing for the magazine. Add Beyonce and it’s a game changer.
Misty Copeland is the first African-American principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre. Copeland rose from poverty to being on ‘pointe’ on Broadway. She made her broadway debut in “On The Town” on August 25th. She covers this September’s Essence. Even though we always see black faces on the cover of Essence, this cover will forever represent history.
After a public break-up with boyfriend Future and giving birth to her first child, Ciara shows us she’s stronger than ever on the cover of Shape magazine. With her hands wrapped, she’s a knockout!
We’ve all seen the Scandal star on the cover of Glamour this year. It wasn’t the most ideal look for Ms. Washington, but the Kerry I love is back. With her melanin on fleek, she shows her true ‘Self’ this September.
I love seeing my favorite black celebrities on the newsstands. I love magazines so much, and I always want to be able to see myself on one of the covers. This September it happened the right way.
Fall is approaching in Oxford fast, and I’m totally prepared. Fall is my favorite season for fashion. Anybody can put together a sundress and sandals for the summer, but once the weather breaks you notice who has true style.
I keep my wardrobe stocked and prepared for the season changes. Most pieces in my closet can transcend from one season to the next easily.
This summer I wore halter tops that could be paired with anything. So, to take this Forever21 black halter top from summer to fall quickly, I paired it with a faux leather skater skirt that I’d gotten from ASOS a couple of years ago. Together they are magical.
This faux leather skater skirt inspired me to bring out my leather Chinese Laundry wedges. These shoes helps every element in the look to mesh perfectly together. I add gold accessories to bring some light to the darkness.
I’m wearing my hair in its natural state right now, so, hoop earrings are a must in jewelry box right now. I love how my hair adds to the look. Along with the location, I feel like it’s the 70s in London!
I pray this fall be filled with amazingly good style, and it’s captured by great photos.
